Dr. Jason Ahlan (naturopath)
Dr. Jason Ahlan spoke to our office on the uses and benefits of chelation
therapy. In chemistry, chelation refers to the binding of a metal to a
compound in a way that does not allow the metal to bind to another substance.
In this way toxic metals can be removed from the body by using certain
chelators that are either natural or pharmaceutical. Chelators can be
taken orally or intravenously.
Chelation therapy was first introduced during World War I to treat soldiers
affected by arsenic based poison gas. Today’s treatment is mainly
used in the effort to improve individual health by the removal of environmental
toxins such as mercury and lead. Chelation therapy begins with a detailed
health history followed by blood and urine samples that help to establish
a physiological base line for further monitoring. A provocation test is
then performed. This test involves the administration of a chosen chelator
followed by another urine sampling. The provocation test demonstrates
the levels of heavy metals detectable in body tissues. At this point a
series of treatments will begin using the chosen chelator as well as supportive
care with antioxidant vitamins and natural chelators such as garlic and
cilantro. Treatment success is determined by the level of decrease or
absence of toxic metals measured on following urine analysis.
